The Queen Mary 2, Cunard's flagship, has arrived in New York City after a significant seven-day North Atlantic Crossing, carrying the Eternal Flame. This journey marks a poignant tribute to the 80th Anniversary of D-Day, honouring the sacrifices and bravery of those who participated in the WWII Normandy Landings of 1944. A commemorative ceremony onboard Queen Mary 2 was held by the Consulate General of France, La Flamme de la Liberté, and Cunard.

A Journey of Honour and Remembrance

The Eternal Flame, which has been burning since November 11, 1923, on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier under the Arc de Triomphe, began its journey on May 8. This flame symbolises the undying remembrance of those who served in WWII. A group of 12 young French ambassadors carried the flame from Paris to Cherbourg, where it crossed the English Channel to Portsmouth. From there, it made its way to Southampton before boarding Queen Mary 2 for its historic voyage across the Atlantic to New York.

The Commemorative Ceremony in New York

Upon arrival in New York, a heartfelt ceremony was held to honour the significance of the Eternal Flame and the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. Attendees included Mr. Laurent Bili, Ambassador of France to the United States; Mr. Damien Laban, Acting Consul General of France in New York; Mr. Edward Mermelstein, Commissioner for International Affairs, City of New York; Queen Mary 2 Captain Andrew Hall; General Patton's granddaughter, Helen Ayer-Patton; and WWII veterans from The Greatest Generations Foundation.

Captain Andrew Hall expressed the ship's honour in participating in this historic event, stating, "We are honoured that our flagship Queen Mary 2 was part of this historic occasion honouring the men and women who served in D-Day, and the many hundreds of thousands of whom were brought over the Atlantic on Cunard ships. Today will truly be remembered as an important part of Cunard's long and storied history."

The Significance of the Eternal Flame

The Eternal Flame's journey from Paris to New York is deeply symbolic, representing the continuous remembrance and honour bestowed upon those who fought in WWII. This flame will be taken to Arlington Cemetery, where it will burn until June 6, 2024, marking the actual date of the D-Day landings. The presence of the flame at Arlington will serve as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by countless soldiers.

The flame's journey involved crossing significant WWII locations, including Cherbourg and Portsmouth, key ports in the Normandy Invasion. This route was chosen to highlight the historical importance of these locations and their connection to the D-Day operations.
