The $151 million project, situated at Pier 16, promises to further elevate Galveston's status as a leading cruise hub in the U.S., with the terminal set to open its doors in November 2025. ## A Milestone Celebration: Laying the Foundation for Growth On August 20, 2024, Galveston Wharves hosted a groundbreaking ceremony at Pier 16, attended by more than 100 distinguished guests, including executives from [MSC Cruises](https://www.msccruises.com/int) and the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), elected officials, community leaders, and port partners. He also welcomed MSC Cruises, the world's third-largest cruise line, noting that their decision to homeport in Galveston reflects the port's growing influence in both U.S. and global markets. ## The Vision for Cruise Terminal 16 The new 165,000-square-foot terminal, along with a $55 million parking garage, is designed to enhance the embarkation experience for MSC Seascape passengers. The terminal will feature lush landscaping, ample parking, a spacious check-in area, and a lounge for MSC Yacht Club guests, ensuring comfort and convenience from the moment guests arrive. Rick Sasso, MSC Cruises U.S. chairman, shared his excitement about the terminal's development, stating, "The groundbreaking for Cruise Terminal 16 marks a significant milestone in MSC Cruises' ongoing U.S. expansion. This state-of-the-art terminal will set the tone for a memorable cruise experience." ## Economic Impact and Future Projections The construction of this new terminal is more than just a building project; it's a catalyst for economic growth in the region. The Port of Galveston, already the fourth most popular cruise homeport in the U.S., expects to surpass 2 million passengers annually by 2026, a significant milestone in its 24-year history as a cruise homeport. U.S. Congressman Randy Weber, who attended the groundbreaking ceremony, underscored the terminal's importance to the community. "This kind of investment is a game-changer for our community, and it's all thanks to Rodger Rees. His leadership is putting Galveston on the map as a top cruise destination and keeping our port bustling with activity." The port's 2022 cruise activity had a substantial local impact, generating 3,500 jobs, $568 million in local business revenue, and $73.5 million in local purchases by passengers and crew. The addition of the fourth cruise terminal is forecast to create an additional 925 jobs and $177 million in local business revenue annually, further solidifying Galveston's role as a key economic driver in the region. ## Looking Ahead: MSC Seascape's Arrival When MSC Seascape begins sailing from Galveston in November 2025, it will mark the beginning of a new chapter for the port and the cruise line.
