Explore Mongolia with Viking’s New Spirit of Mongolia Extension

Viking in Mongolia

Viking Cruises has unveiled an exciting addition to their already impressive lineup of itineraries – the new "Spirit of Mongolia" extension. This five-night, fully guided tour offers guests an unparalleled opportunity to delve into Mongolia's rich history and stunning landscapes either before or after their China voyages.

For the first time, Viking guests can explore the ancient city of Ulaanbaatar and the vast Gobi Desert, immersing themselves in the unique traditions of this captivating region.

A Journey Into Mongolia's Heart

The "Spirit of Mongolia" extension is a thrilling new offering from Viking, designed to provide a deeper cultural experience. As Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking, stated, “We were proud to announce our new China ocean voyages recently, and we are now pleased to offer guests our first experiences in Mongolia. Our guests are curious travellers who are interested in experiences that broaden their minds. With its geographic diversity and incredible history, Mongolia is an extraordinary destination making it a natural extension to our new China itineraries."

Viking Mongolia Journey

Guests embarking on this journey will start in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia's bustling capital. Here, they will meet their Viking Representative and explore significant sites such as the Chinggis Khaan National Museum, Mongolia's largest and most contemporary cultural institution. A behind-the-scenes tour of the paleontology lab offers a rare glimpse into the region's ancient past.

Exploring the Gobi Desert

From Ulaanbaatar, the adventure continues to Dalanzadgad and the award-winning Three Camel Lodge, located in the Gobi Desert near the Gurvan Saikhan National Park. At the Three Camel Lodge, guests will stay in traditional gers, modernised with all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. For three days, they can choose from a variety of activities, including archery, camel safaris, and explorations of the famous Flaming Cliffs.

The more adventurous might join a sunrise trek through the desert hills with a naturalist guide or ascend Bulagtai Mountain for panoramic views of the steppe and ancient petroglyphs. Culinary enthusiasts can learn to make buuz (steamed dumplings) with the lodge's Mongolian chef.

Additional Immersive Extensions

Beyond Mongolia, Viking offers several other immersive Pre and Post extensions for guests wishing to explore more of China. These include:
