The cruise line expects travellers to consider combining the two experiences when its river operations begin in 2027. Celebrity Cruises Eyes River and Ocean Holiday Combinations for 2027 10:18 The opportunity for [**Celebrity river and ocean cruises**](https://www.celebritycruises.com/int/river)is taking shape as the company's European offerings expand. Celebrity is working with travel partners to coordinate the different booking schedules, while its recently introduced river cruise extensions offer additional time in four European cities. ## Celebrity Looks to Connect Ocean and River Cruising in Europe Celebrity's entry into river cruising represents a significant addition to its European programme. The company expects its established ocean cruise audience to take an interest in inland itineraries, particularly when planning longer holidays. Speaking aboard Celebrity Solstice, vice president and managing director Tim Jones outlined how the two products might complement each other. He sees the expanding fleet and broader itinerary selection as opportunities for travellers to experience different parts of Europe during one trip. ![celebrity-compass-river-cruise-ship-2560x1440](https://blog.swblack.com.au/hs-fs/hubfs/celebrity-compass-river-cruise-ship-2560x1440.jpg?width=798&height=720&name=celebrity-compass-river-cruise-ship-2560x1440.jpg) [Image courtesy of Celebrity Cruise](https://www.celebritycruises.com/int/itinerary/7-night-dutch-belgian-tulips-from-amsterdam-on-compass-RC7RC013?sailDate=2028-03-30&packageCode=RC7RC013&groupId=RC07AMS-3146624367) ### River Cruising Joins Celebrity's European Programme in 2027 Celebrity is scheduled to begin river cruising in 2027, introducing a new way for guests to travel through Europe. The programme will sit alongside its existing ocean itineraries, which already provide a selection of European destinations. The distinction between the two experiences is important. Ocean cruising focuses on destinations reached through maritime routes, while river cruising provides access to inland waterways and the cities and regions along them. For travellers interested in both, combining the products would create a longer holiday with different destinations and styles of cruising. The opportunity remains dependent on compatible itineraries becoming available. ### Tim Jones Anticipates Demand for Combined Holidays Jones expects guests to take advantage of Celebrity's growing European selection by booking river and ocean cruises together. He identified the expanding itinerary range as an important reason travellers might consider a combined journey. The company also sees potential among Australian travellers interested in exploring inland Europe by river. The same concept holds appeal for international guests who prefer to spend more time in the region during one holiday. Celebrity's plans reflect an expectation of customer demand rather than an announcement of fully packaged combinations. Individual departures and their compatibility will determine which arrangements are practical. ### A Growing Fleet Creates More Itinerary Possibilities Celebrity's European fleet expansion is helping shape its longer-term plans. As additional cruising options enter the programme, travellers will have more itineraries to consider when deciding how to spend their time in Europe. An ocean voyage followed by a river cruise would provide two distinct experiences within the same holiday. Travellers might also prefer to begin with a river itinerary before continuing their journey aboard an ocean ship. Neither sequence has been confirmed as a standard package across the fleet. The main development is Celebrity's intention to connect the products as its European operations grow. ## Booking Schedules Remain a Key Planning Challenge Combining two cruises involves more than selecting appealing destinations. Travellers need compatible departure dates, sufficient time between sailings and a practical way to travel between the relevant ports. Celebrity has acknowledged the challenges involved, particularly because its ocean and river programmes have followed different booking release schedules. The company is working with travel partners to make the process more manageable. ![pre\_and\_post\_overview](https://blog.swblack.com.au/hs-fs/hubfs/pre_and_post_overview.jpg?width=2560&height=1440&name=pre_and_post_overview.jpg) [Image courtesy of Celebrity Cruise](https://www.celebritycruises.com/int/itinerary/7-night-dutch-belgian-tulips-from-amsterdam-on-compass-RC7RC013?sailDate=2028-03-30&packageCode=RC7RC013&groupId=RC07AMS-3146624367) ### Different Release Dates Complicate Combined Bookings Jones explained that Celebrity launched its river product in January, while the ocean summer programme was released later, around August and September. This difference has made it harder to present the two experiences together from the outset. For travellers planning a longer European holiday, staggered releases create an additional consideration. One preferred sailing might become available before the other, leaving the complete itinerary difficult to confirm immediately. Celebrity is working to bring the programmes together through its packaging efforts. The company has not announced a universal booking arrangement covering every possible ocean and river combination. ### Travel Partners Help Bring the Products Together Celebrity is working with the travel trade to encourage existing ocean guests to consider river cruising. Jones highlighted travel partners' experience in arranging different products as an important part of this process. A cruise adviser has a practical role in assessing the available options. This includes checking sailing dates, identifying departure and arrival locations, and reviewing the travel required between two cruises. These details become particularly important when the itineraries operate from different European cities. A suitable combination should account for the entire journey rather than treating each cruise as an isolated booking. ### Existing Ocean Guests Represent an Important Audience Celebrity's established ocean cruise customers are a natural audience for its upcoming river programme. Many already know the cruise line through its ships and European itineraries, giving Celebrity an existing customer base to introduce to river travel. For returning guests, the new programme provides another option when considering future European holidays. Someone who previously selected an ocean voyage might now look at an inland itinerary as a potential extension. The company is encouraging this connection through its work with travel partners. Travellers should still confirm the details of each product before assuming two preferred sailings will fit together. ## European City Extensions Add Another Dimension Alongside its plans for combining ocean and river voyages, Celebrity has introduced extensions for its European river programme. These stays offer additional time in selected cities and provide another option for travellers considering a longer trip. The extensions cover Prague, Budapest, Amsterdam and Lausanne. Each includes a Discovery Collection tour, with stays available for two or three nights. ### Prague and Budapest Feature in the Extension Selection Prague and Budapest are two of the four cities included in Celebrity's river extension offering. Travellers interested in spending additional time in either destination have the option of a short stay associated with the programme. The extensions provide two- and three-night options, allowing guests to consider how much time they want to allocate beyond their cruise. Each stay includes one Discovery Collection tour. The supplied announcement does not identify which river departures connect with each city extension. Travellers should check the options available for their selected itinerary before including a stay in their plans. ![celebrity-compass-aft-pool-2560x1440](https://blog.swblack.com.au/hs-fs/hubfs/celebrity-compass-aft-pool-2560x1440.jpg?width=801&height=723&name=celebrity-compass-aft-pool-2560x1440.jpg) [Image courtesy of Celebrity Cruise](https://www.celebritycruises.com/int/itinerary/7-night-dutch-belgian-tulips-from-amsterdam-on-compass-RC7RC013?sailDate=2028-03-30&packageCode=RC7RC013&groupId=RC07AMS-3146624367) ### Amsterdam and Lausanne Complete the Four-City Offering Amsterdam and Lausanne are also part of Celebrity's announced extension programme. Their inclusion gives travellers two further European cities to consider alongside Prague and Budapest. The same two- and three-night stay structure applies to the programme. An included Discovery Collection tour provides an organised experience during the extension, although the individual activities have not been detailed in the announcement. These stays offer another way to extend time in Europe without booking an additional cruise. Their suitability will depend on the river itinerary and the traveller's wider schedule. ### Discovery Collection Tours Add an Included Experience Each of Celebrity's four city extensions includes one Discovery Collection tour. This gives the stays a defined touring element alongside the additional nights in the destination. The announcement does not specify the activities included in each city's tour. Guests should review the relevant extension details to understand what is offered and whether it suits their interests. For travellers considering **Celebrity river and ocean cruises**, the city extensions introduce another element to the planning process. An additional stay might complement a longer European holiday, provided the dates and travel arrangements align. --- Celebrity's plans for river cruising in 2027 introduce new possibilities for travellers interested in longer European holidays.
